Getting around Bangkok is easy and inexpensive using the ubiquitous air conditioned "Taxi Meter" taxi's. The one's that are free display a red sign on the passengers side of the windshield. It is imperative that you tell the driver to turn the meter on, if they don't, exit the taxi immediately or expect to pay a higher fare. The following is a breakdown of the rates. The Thai Baht is about 40 to the U.S. Dollar.

  • Flag down 35 baht up to 1.6 mile
  • 1.6 to 8.4 miles 7.5 baht per mile
  • 8.5 to 12 miles 8.5 baht per mile
  • over 20miles 9.25 baht per mile
  • standing time1.25 baht per minute
Of course the unit of measure is kilometers in Thailand, but this conversion should help you realize how inexpensive the "Taxi Meter" is. Tips are not expected but an extra 10 or 20 baht will be greatly appreciated. Also be sure to get someone to write down your destination in Thai script for the Taxi driver. A map of the city with your destination marked also helps.
